There are places whose history is written in stone. Nazaré's is written in the sea.

For generations, this Portuguese village lived facing the Atlantic. Fishing dictated the rhythm of its days and also the character of its people. Boats set sail from the beach while families awaited their return, and many of those traditions still survive today: fish drying in the sun, the old boats, the women in their traditional seven skirts, and a maritime culture inseparable from Nazaré's identity.

But off its coast, there has always been something extraordinary.North of the Sítio promontory, next to the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo and its distinctive red lighthouse, the Atlantic can reach unimaginable proportions.The reason lies hidden beneath the ocean: the Nazaré Canyon, a gigantic underwater formation that stretches for more than 200 kilometers and reaches depths of nearly 5,000 meters. Its unique geography concentrates and amplifies the swells coming from the Atlantic, creating the gigantic walls of water that have made Praia do Norte famous.

The inhabitants of Nazaré have always known the power of that sea. But the world began to look at it differently when, in the early 2010s, Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara accepted the challenge of surfing its giant waves.

In 2011, he rode a wave of approximately 24 meters at Praia do Norte, recognized at the time by Guinness as the largest wave ever surfed. The images went viral and forever changed the recent history of Nazaré.

What for centuries had been a sea feared and respected by fishermen also became a challenge for some of the best big-wave surfers in the world.

Since then, every winter, when the great swells of the Atlantic arrive, thousands of people gather by the Nazaré lighthouse to witness one of the greatest natural spectacles on the planet.

But Nazaré is so much more than its giant waves.It's Praia da Nazaré and Praia do Norte. It's the Sítio neighborhood, overlooking the ocean from atop the cliff. It's the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, its streets, its viewpoints, its fishermen, and traditions that still remind us that long before becoming a global phenomenon, Nazaré already belonged to the sea.

In this video, we explore some of these places from the air, trying to show the two sides of Nazaré: the fishing village that preserves its roots and the breathtaking natural landscape that turned the world's attention to this corner of Portugal.

Because here, perhaps more than anywhere else...the waves seem to touch the sky. 🌊
